The drive

This Million Dollar Highway guide follows US 550 from the Silverton approach through Red Mountain Pass to Ouray. It covers that specific mountain-road segment, not the much longer San Juan Skyway loop.

The route passes through exposed mountain terrain and the Uncompahgre Gorge corridor. Expect steep grades, sharp bends and stretches with limited shoulders. Drivers uncomfortable with exposed roads should consider another itinerary rather than relying on a navigation app to make the drive suitable.

Silverton and Ouray are the endpoint areas, not guaranteed parking or service stops. The route distance excludes your journey to southwest Colorado and the return trip. This is not presented as a short drive from Denver.

RevScore: this route's curviness

43/100 Twisty

Calculated from the bends and distance in this exact mapped route using RevRoute's existing scoring formula. Heading-change density: approximately 257° per km.

A geometry-based route score, not a user review, driving-performance ranking, difficulty rating or safety assessment. Elevation is not part of the current formula. Recorded-drive scores may differ because GPS sampling and speed weighting differ. Never change your speed to improve a score.

How these planning facts were checked

The OSRM car-routing model was checked against 100 points along this exact GPX, including its loop or segment shape—not simply the fastest route between the endpoints. The 1 h–1 h 35 min range uses rounded planning allowances of 15–75% above the model's no-live-traffic baseline. These allowances are not measured traffic statistics or a guarantee; allow extra time for lunch, photographs and other stops.

Terrain elevations were sampled at 100 points along the GPX using the USGS NED approximately 10-metre terrain dataset hosted by Open Topo Data (dataset snapshot: April 23, 2020). The displayed range is rounded to 50 feet / 10 metres. It is an approximate sampled range—not an exact road minimum/maximum, summit height or cumulative elevation gain. Terrain can differ from the road surface around tunnels, bridges and road cuts.

Facts checked October 19, 2026. Sources are linked under “Guide sources.” The original GPX remains an untimed map trace; these modeled facts are not recorded-drive measurements.

Driving notes

  1. Plan while parked

Preview or change navigation only when safely parked. Follow posted speed limits and other restrictions.

  2. Estimates are not arrival promises

The displayed range is a no-live-traffic planning model for this exact segment. Traffic, weather, closures and stops can add substantial time.

  3. Check the official source

Use COtrip for current road restrictions and conditions immediately before travel; this guide is not a live closure service.

Places along the route

  • Silverton approach

Start of the mapped US 550 segment outside central Silverton; town sightseeing and parking are separate.

  • Ouray

End of this one-way itinerary. Plan a legal stopping location and any return journey separately.

Seasons & weather

Do not assume that a through-highway is clear in winter. Allow for weather-related closures and maintenance, and check conditions for both the route and the approach journey.

Cautions

  • Exposed mountain road — check conditions

Snow, ice, rockfall and avalanche-control work can affect US 550. This guide does not confirm that the road is currently open. Check COtrip before departure and follow every posted restriction.

Questions drivers ask

Is this the full San Juan Skyway?

No. The GPX covers the US 550 segment between the Silverton approach and Ouray, not the full scenic-byway loop.

Is the Million Dollar Highway open right now?

This guide is not a live road-status service. Check the linked COtrip source for current restrictions and conditions.
