The drive

Newfound Gap Road is the US 441 crossing through Great Smoky Mountains National Park between its Tennessee and North Carolina sides. This GPX runs from the Sugarlands junction over Newfound Gap to the Cherokee-side Blue Ridge Parkway approach.

The trace is the park crossing, not the full drive through Gatlinburg or downtown Cherokee. It excludes Kuwohi Road, visitor-center driveways and hiking trails. Those destinations require their own access and parking plans.

An NPS wind-closure notice posted October 9, 2026 said US 441 would remain closed for October 10 and be reassessed the following day. That time-limited notice does not establish today's status. Check the official park update before departure; never bypass a gate.

RevScore: this route's curviness

34/100 Cruiser

Calculated from the bends and distance in this exact mapped route using RevRoute's existing scoring formula. Heading-change density: approximately 202° per km.

A geometry-based route score, not a user review, driving-performance ranking, difficulty rating or safety assessment. Elevation is not part of the current formula. Recorded-drive scores may differ because GPS sampling and speed weighting differ. Never change your speed to improve a score.

How these planning facts were checked

This route is currently closed to vehicle access. Its mapped geometry and terrain facts are provided for reference, not as an available driving itinerary.

Terrain elevations were sampled at 100 points along the GPX using the USGS NED approximately 10-metre terrain dataset hosted by Open Topo Data (dataset snapshot: April 23, 2020). The displayed range is rounded to 50 feet / 10 metres. It is an approximate sampled range—not an exact road minimum/maximum, summit height or cumulative elevation gain. Terrain can differ from the road surface around tunnels, bridges and road cuts.

Facts checked October 11, 2026. Sources are linked under “Guide sources.” The original GPX remains an untimed map trace; these modeled facts are not recorded-drive measurements.

Driving notes

  1. Drive within posted limits

These are public roads shared with residents, cyclists, wildlife and other visitors—not closed courses. Stay in your lane and leave room for slower traffic.

  2. Plan fuel and breaks separately

Choose lawful meeting and parking places before departure. The road trace does not reserve parking or include attraction entrance roads, walking trails or lunch stops.

  3. Park parking rules

A parking tag generally applies when parking for more than 15 minutes; simply driving through is different. Check current park rules and exceptions.

Places along the route

  • Newfound Gap

A separate lawful parking stop when the road and parking area are open. Walking trails are not part of the GPX.

Seasons & weather

Mountain fog, wind, ice and fallen debris can change access quickly. Check the linked park, Tennessee and North Carolina road reports before departure. This source review is not a live road-status service; a GPX never overrides a gate or closure.

Questions drivers ask

Is Newfound Gap Road confirmed open?

This guide does not confirm today's access. The reviewed wind-closure notice applied to October 10, 2026; check the linked official park update before departure.

Does this GPX include Kuwohi?

No. Kuwohi Road and its seasonal access are separate from this US 441 crossing.

Does driving through require a parking tag?

The park distinguishes driving through from parking. Check the current official requirements before planning stops.
